Digipak Flat Plans

This is the front cover for my first design.

The colours used on this cover will be mainly greens and brown as the picture will be taken in the woods. The girl on the cover will be in a white dress so there will be splashes of other colours included. The browns and greens will be dark shades as the colour of my font will be white meaning that the artist name and single title are bold and clear.

The artist name and single title are positioned at the top of the cover so that they are clear and noticed first. It is positioned there so that it stands out from the background. The girl in the picture is positioned in the centre of the image so that she is noticed and so that the woods surrounding her are round her. I chose this so that it makes her look lost and confused.

The artist name will be in capitals and in white. I chose capitals so that it is clear who the artist is makes their name bold and stand out. The single title will be directly below it in white but this writing will be in lower cases. It will still be noticeable as it will be directly below the artist name. As we read things from top to bottom, the single title will follow on once we have read the artist name.

The image is of a girl standing in a white dress in the middle of the woods. The image will be in the woods which means that the image will be full and there won't be any blank spaces needing to be filled. The colours also help fill the space as there are a mixture of greens, browns and a bold splash of white.

This is the back cover design for my first idea.

The colours used on this back cover will match the front cover and be browns and greens as the picture is being taken in the woods. The information at the bottom of the cover will also be written in white so that it stands out. It also matches the theme that is on the front cover.

The bar code, logo and information about the making of the single will be written at the bottom of the CD as this is the most common place they are kept. It is also because they are not as important as the rest of the cover but still need to be included on the back cover.

The only font on the back cover will be the information about the making of the single. This font will be in white and will be in the same font as the writing on the front cover so that everything matches.

The image on the back cover will be of the woods and will be taken so that it there are no huge gaps on the in the image but so that the whole back cover is full up. This gives it a more professional look and makes sure that it doesn't look odd.

This is the inner left panel design for my first idea.

There won't be much colour on this page. The background will be of the woods and so there will only be greens and browns in this page. The females hair colour of red will also provide colour for this page. The redness of her hair will draw attention away from the background which isn't important to this image.

I have positioned only half of her face on the inner left panel as her entire face as a close up would dominate the space and there would be too much of her on show. By having some of the background on show, this allows us to see that she is still in the woods and allows us to get a sense of the setting. The reason I have positioned her face on the left hand side of the panel is because when opening the CD, the left hand side of the left panel is the first thing you see rather than the right hand side of the left panel.

The fact that the female in this picture has been taken as a close up shot draws attention away from the background. It also allows us to see her emotions as on the front cover, we cannot see her facial expression which allows us to no how she's feeling. By not showing her whole face, it means we can still see the setting around her and still see the detail in here facial expression.

This is the front cover for my second design.

On this front cover, the cover will have a mixture of different green's and brown's as the image is taken in the woods. The font will be in white which will make it stand out from the background. The white will make the artist name and single title stand out from the background which will draw our attention to them. The white also gives the cover a little bit of colour but not too overwhelming that it dominates the entire cover and distracts the meaning of the image; the face that the woods is empty and alone.

I have positioned the artist name and single title in the centre of the image so we are automatically drawn to them meaning they are the first thing we notice. This allows us to instantly no what we are looking at and if we want to no more. I have positioned the artist name above the single title because we read from top to bottom so the second most important piece of information will directly follow the most important piece of information on the cover.

I have written the artist name is capitals and will be in bold so it is clear and stands out from the rest. The single title will be directly below it and in the same font however it won't be in capitals. This is because otherwise the artist name and the single title will dominate the entire front cover and people won't be able to see the background clearly.

The image is of the woods where the main music video is set. This links the front cover of the single to the music video itself. The woods will also fill the frame of the cover and will make sure there isn't any unwanted space.

This is the back cover design for my second idea.

The colours used on this cover are mainly greens and browns as the picture is taken in the woods. The sky is visible in this image as it's meant to be raining. This will provide greys for the image and will mean that it is clear that the mood is sad. The trees in the image will not provide and green or other colours as they will be bare as it's meant to show the bad and sad side to the song's mood. The front cover shows the happy side to the song and the back cover shows the sad side.

I have positioned the logo, information about the making of the video and CD and the bar code at the bottom of the page as this is where they are mainly found. They are also less important so by positioning them at the bottom, it is clear that they are not important and will be the last thing seen.

The only font on the back cover will be the information of the making of the video and CD. This will be written in the same font as the writing on the front cover and will also be written in white. This is so a theme is shown on both the front and back cover.

The image is of the woods after or during a storm. The trees are bare which is to show the sad mood to the song. There will be more space in this image so that the sky can be seen. This will show that there is no sun in the sky and that the sky is depressing.

For this design, I wish for the inner left panel to be one colour.

This is the front cover design for my third idea.

The colour on this image will have a black and white theme. The background is of their bedroom and their bedroom walls will be white. The bed the two people are sitting on will be black with black covers. The two people sitting on the bed will then be wearing white. This is so that each item helps make other items stand out and get noticed.

I have positioned the artist name and the single title in the centre of the image but raised slightly. This means it can still be seen but is not taking over the whole cover and so that there isn't any room for an image. I have positioned the image just under the writing so that it is seen next after the writing.

The font on this cover will be written in black so that it stands out from the background of white. The artist name will be written in capitals so that it stands and the single title will be written directly below it. The single title however will be in written in lower cases as both in capitals will dominate the cover.

The image is of a couple sitting on a bed. This links the cover to the video as the video contains flashbacks of the couple in a house. This does leave room around the writing and image however this works will as it means that the whole image hasn't been taken over and that the focus is just on these things.

The colour will still follow the black and white theme. The background will be white, the girl will be wearing white and the bed and bed covers will be black.

It is also a large image that takes up the whole of the back cover so that we can see the expression on her face clearly and all the detail. It is also so that we notice that the male is no longer on the page.

This is the inner left panel design for my third idea.

There won't be much colour on this page, only the colour from the female and males hair. The background can be seen in this image however the background will be white so there aren't any distractions or unnecessary details.

I have positioned half of the females face on the left and half of the males face on the right so that both can be seen equally and clearly. I also chose to only include half of their faces so that the image wasn't too overcrowded with both their full faces in the image.

The image is of half of the females face and half of the males face. This is so that we can see their facial expressions clearly whilst at the same time not overcrowding the image and not being able to see the image clearly.

Evaluated Animatic

Below is our completed animatic. Creating this allowed us to see how certain shots would fit together and how camera techniques we could use.

The first shot shows the female sitting at the end of a pontoon. This is an establishing shot as we can see clearly the female sitting and the lake and woods surrounding. This shot then slowly zooms in toward the female so we are aware that she is the main focus and to make the audience aware of her.

The next shot is a flashback shot which will be filmed in black and white to show that it shows a different time period. This shot is of the couple in bed. The start of the shot starts so that we are very close to the gap between the couple and then we slowly zoom out to see the couple and the gap between the couple.

The next shot is then of the female and this shot is a close up so we can see her emotions fully. Then shot then cuts to the male so that we can get a close up of him and his emotions. It then cuts back out to the full view of them both together so that the gap it still taken into account.

The next 3 shots to follow are of the female gradually walking towards the door. This is to make it seem more dramatic and to show that while she leaves, the male in the bed doesn't move.

The next shot is another establishing shot. The shot pans a field and reveals a sunset. The idea is to shot the different times of day so that people are aware that this story takes place over different times of the day.

The next shot is of the female running through the forest and the camera moves with her. This is to give the audience a connection with the female and so that it makes the audience feel as though they are actually there.

The next shot is a close up of the females feet. This is so that we can see just how fast she is running and it gives us a closer connection to the female and allows us to feel we are actually there with her.

The next shot is of the sunset when the sun is a little lower in the sky. This shows that it's a different time of the day.

The next shot shows the girl crying. This is made visible by the girls make up running down her face so that it is very clear she has been crying. This shot is mainly for the emotional side to the female and so that the audience get an idea of how she is feeling.

The next shot is another flashback shot. It shows the female and the male sitting of opposite sides of the bed getting dressed. This shot is so that the audience can get a sense of the distance between the two and can get a feel for their relationship.

The shot then cuts to a close up of the females hands as she's getting dressed. This clearly shows that there is a ring on her engagement finger and so the audience are aware of the full extent of their relationship. The shot then zooms into the females finger and turns into a close up of just the engagement ring.

The next shot is a side shot of the female sitting on the pontoon. The shot is close enough so that we can see she's been crying but is also far enough away so that the audience is able to see where she is and what time period it is. The shot then zooms out and we can see the setting better than we can see the female.

The next shot shows the female dropping the engagement ring into the water and this shows the audience the reason behind the females crying and her sadness. The shot then turns into a close up of the ring as it falls into the water and this is so that we can get a better look and feel as the ring goes into the water.

Evaluated Storyboard

The first of the six images is of the female sitting away from the camera alone on decking placed over the water. The shot is a long shot and this shots sets the scene and allows us to not only see the female but to also see the water around her. This shot is also a straight angle shot which means that we don't see the females face. At this point, we do not want to see the females face. This shot is also a point of view shot. It looks as though someone is looking at the female from the other end of the decking.

The second image from the six shots is a follow on from the previous shot. It is a close up and straight angle shot of the females head. Her head is slightly lowered which shows that she is sad. We still cannot see her face at this point but can tell she is sad from her lowered head.

The third image from the six shots is a bird's eye view of the couple lying in bed. It's a mid shot and straight angle. The reason for it being a mid shot is so that you are able to see the couple's expressions and the fact that they are back to back but at the same time also see part of the bed which shows they are in a bed. The reason for it being a straight angle shot is so that there isn't any unnecessary items in the background and so that we can see the couple clearly.

The fourth image from the six shots is a close up of the male. It's a different view to the previous image. The reason for it being a close up is so that the focus is moved from the couple lying in bed to just the male lying in bed and so that we can see even more clearly just the males facial expression.

The fifth image from the six shots is a close up of the female. It's a different view to image number three. It's so we can clearly see the females facial expression and that the focus is taken away from the couple lying in bed and just the man lying in bed to just the female lying in bed.

The sixth image from the six shots is stage one of the female walking away from the man. This shot is a long shot. The reason for this is so that the audience is able to see what the female is doing. The shot include the man lying in bed and so we are able to clearly see that she is leaving him.

The first image from the six shots is a follow on from the sixth shot of the images above. It shows the female further away as she is leaving. The idea is that there are three shots in total and each shot shows her at different shot. However these won't be continuous shots. They will just be placed one after the other and she will just appear in these places.

The second image from the six shots is the third stage of the female leaving. In this shot she is barely noticeable but the man is still in the same position to show that it is still the same day and time and that the female is the only thing moving. All three shots will be long shots so that we can see everything around in the room and so that we are able to see clearly that the man is in the bed and is not aware of what is going on around him.

The third image from the six shots is of a sunset. In the image you are not able to see that it is a sunset as the image is still. The reason for this image is so we are able to see what time of day it is. It also shows hills underneath the sun which makes it look more peaceful.

The fourth image from the six shots is a close up of the females legs. This shot will be a tracking shot and the camera will be following the females legs as she runs through the woods. The reason for the shot being a close is because then we are able to get a sense of how fast she is running and to make us feel connected to her.

The fifth image from the six shots is then a long shot of the female running. This is a side view from the image before. The shot will also be shot through the trees so that we are still able to see her clearly but also so that she is darting in and out of the trees as if she is lost and confused.

The sixth image from the six shots is a front view of the image before. In this shot the female will run towards to camera and stop with just her face at the camera so that the shot becomes a close up. This is so we can see that her make up has run from where she has been crying.

The first image from the six shots is of the sun at a different stage of the sunset. This is so we know the it is a different time of the day but not night. This shot is the same as the previous sunset shot. We are still able to tell that it's peaceful and secluded.


The second image from the six shots a long shot of the female. In this shot, she is meant to look like an object lost in the woods and is meant to blend in with the woods which is what she is meant to be feeling; lost.

The third image from the six shots is a close up of the female putting on a necklace. This image shows a flashback of when the couple were happier. The reason for the close up is so that we can the engagement ring she is wearing that plays an important role in the video towards the end of the video.

The fourth image from the six shots is a different view from the previous image. It shows a long shot of the couple sitting on different sides of the bed facing away from each other. This is so we are able to see the distance between then and see how distant they feel from each other.

The fifth image from the six shots is a close up of the female sitting alone. This image will be from the present day. The present day shots will be in black and white to shot the sadder times and the flashbacks will be in colour to show the happier times. This image is mainly to see her facial expression however you will be able to see some of the background so that you are able to see that she is by the water.

The sixth image from the six shots is a long shot of the previous shot. This is so that we are able to see the background around her and see that she is alone is large area. This is to show the loneliness she feels.

The first image from the two shots shows a tracking shot. The shot will follow the engagement ring as the female throws it into the water. This is so we can clearly see she is throwing something into the water but not sure what.

The second image from the two images is a close up from the shot before. It shows clearly what is being thrown into the water and that it is the engagement ring. This allows us to no the reason behind how she is feeling and why she is running away. It also shows why she is alone is all present day shots and then why the flashback shots, the female and male are very distant.

The Pitch

This video is me and Emily Greenland presenting our powerpoint presentation.

Digipack

A digipack is 'a type of CD packaging made out of card stock or other heavy paper material'. A digipack can either open like a book or can be in three parts with the right hand side opening out, the left hand side opening out and the CD being in the centre. http://musicians.about.com/od/ah/g/digipacksleeve.htm

A promo pack is all elements of selling a record in one. A typical promo pack includes a music video, digipak, posters and a demo of the song.

When creating my music video and my digipak, I must link them by having some elements each and link them to the other. For example, in my music video, the girl will be wearing a long white dress and on my CD cover, the girl will be on the cover in the long white dress.

As our music video genre is rock, the first digipack I will be analysing is 'The Killers - Sawdust'.
This is the outer front panel of the CD case.

The colours used on this CD cover are mainly deep yellows and browns which give it a old look to it. The colours also respond well to the title of 'Sawdust' as sawdust is also a yellow and brown colour. As there are only two main colours on this cover, it doesn't get too overcrowded and confusing when people look at it.

The positioning of the band name and the title of the album are placed central and slightly raised which helps as we are automatically drawn to the title. The hand made from wood is then placed directly below the band name and album title. As we read things from top to bottom, we read the band name, then the album name and then we look at the picture.

The band title 'The Killers' is written out of dots which makes it look glamorous and as the font is white, it stands out from the background so we instantly see the band name. This then means that we read downwards seeing the album name and the hand made from wood. The title is also written with curvy lettering which gives it an edge and doesn't make it look old and gives it an original look to it. This gives the album cover a look that brings it into this time period as the album cover gives it an old look and feeling while the font is new and stylish. These two elements work together and compliment each other.

The album title 'Sawdust' is written like a clock which gives it a professional look. The words are in capital letters which has been done to make it stand out from the band name as the band name is in a larger font that the album name. By putting 'Sawdust' in a brighter yellow than the other yellows on the cover, it is more noticeable and is bolder.

The image on this cover is of a wood with a hand made from wood taken from a straight angle. The woods is very packed and there are trees with branches and leaves filling the background of this album cover. This is a good thing as there are no empty spaces around the cover and the entire album cover is busy. There are things in the foreground such as a grass hill however it is not so much in the foreground that it dominates the cover and takes the focus away from the rest of the cover.

The back cover of this album is very plain and boring. Brown is the only colour used as the picture is of a piece of wood. The song titles have been written in a yellow box which helps make the song titles stand up. However the brown and light yellow don't match each other and they don't look good together.

The position of the song titles is central which means they are the first thing we notice when looking at the back of the album cover. The bar code and information about the making of the album is positioned at the bottom of the back cover which is where most bar codes and information is found on most CD covers. They are not the most important thing on the back cover which is why they get placed at the bottom.

The song titles are written in the same font as the album title of 'Sawdust'. They are written in a black font against the yellow background which makes them stand out from the background. However, they are written in lines which means that are hard to read as they are not split up individually from each other. This does mean that people have to really read the song titles to find the one they want which will focus them on other song titles and make them listen to the other songs as well. This will make the other songs more popular as more people listen to them.

This image is of a piece of wood. The image fills the entire back cover which makes it look very boring as there isn't much going on. The wood is also just one colour which means that it's very plain and not very exciting to look at. This does work well however as all the focus is on the song titles positioned in the centre of the page.


The second album cover I will be analysing is 'Travis - The Boy With No Name'.

This is the outer front panel of the CD case.

The colours on this album cover are all different shades of brown which gives it an old and dainted look. There are elements of black on this album cover but they are shadows created by the light which comes in from the top left hand corner. The light gives the album cover the old and dainty look as it makes the browns bold and lit up.

The band name is written first in capital letters. This makes it bold and noticeable. The A and the V in Travis have been written in italics which means they are close together with the other letters in the band name. This gives it an original look to it as and makes it different from the rest of the font. The album title is written directly below it in the same font. All letters from both the band name and the album cover touch the letter that directly follow one another however the words are still readable.

The band name and album name has been positioned in a shadow created by the light. As the font is in the same colour as the rest of the image, a light brown, it stands out from the background and makes it look bolder than it is. After looking at the font, we can then see the band who is positioned diagonally right of the font. They are very small so are not very noticeable until you look at the band name and album title.

The image is of a number of buildings taken from a high angle. The image has been taken so that the band is small enough that we have to look around for them and make us really look at the cover but at the same time has been taken so that we can still see the detail of the buildings around the band. The buildings have a lot of windows and minor details meaning that detail is important to this image as it gives it life.

The dominant colour on the back cover is a very dark brown. This is because the image has been taken from a different angle and so the light has been lost and has created more shadows. This does work well though as more writing is needed to be put on the back cover and as the font has the same style and colour, it means there is more places for the writing to be placed.

The song titles have been positioned in one of the shadows created by the light. The font is a light brown so when placed in the shadow, they become very noticeable. The position of the bar code and information about the making of the album have been placed in the most common used place, at the bottom. This is because the bar code and the information are not as important as the rest of the stuff included on the back cover.

The font is the same as the font on the from cover however this writing has been written in lower cases. The writing hasn't been written so close together as the writing on the front which means that it is easier to read. This is a good thing as the writing on the back cover is smaller than the writing on the front cover.

The image on the back cover is of the same image as the front cover but from a different angle. This images has been taken from behind the band where as the front cover was taken from in front of the band. The detail within this image has been lost slightly as there is more shadow than light. This does help with the positioning however as more writing is included on the back cover and the theme from the front continues onto the back.

Music Video Idea - Mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scene --> Everything inside the frame including setting, props, costume, make-up, colour.

Our main idea is that the video will be about the breakup of an engagement however the reason for the break up is unknown to the audience.

Setting:

For our idea, we have decided that we will only have three locations where our video will be set. We will shoot our video in woods, by a small lake and a house. Our idea is to have a shot of the girl running through the woods crying. We chose to shoot this particular shot in a wood as it makes it seem more magical and surreal. The house location will be only for the flashbacks we plan to include in our video. The flashbacks will show the happier times of the couple while the present day shots will be used to show the sadder times of the couple. We will be shooting our video in the morning and in the afternoon so we have some strong light to work with.

Costume:

For our idea, we have decided to have two main costumes. We will be putting the girl in a long pale pink dress and the boy will be wearing a pair of dark blue jeans and a white polo shirt. During our flashback shots, the couple will be dressed in more casual clothes. The girl will be dressed in blue jeans and a white top while the boy will be wearing blue jeans and grey tracksuits.

Make-up:

For our idea, we have decided to have the girl in two different types of make-up. For the present day shots, she will be wearing make-up but we will be making it look as if she has been crying and so will make her mascara run down her face. She will then be wearing light make-up in the flashback scenes as part of her everyday look. The boy won't be wearing any make-up.

Colour:

For our idea, we have thought about having the present day stuff in black and white to show that the mood is sad. This will show that they have broken up. We will then have the flashbacks in colour to show the mood is happier and to show that their relationship is good.

Props:

One of the props we plan to use is a ring. We have an idea that in one of the flashbacks, we will show the girl putting on a necklace and you will see the ring on her wedding finger to show that they two are engaged. We then plan to show that the couple have broken up in the a present day shot by showing the girl throwing the ring into a river and we plan to shoot this from a close shot.

Planning My Music Video

The song we have chosen to make a music video to is 'Dreaming With A Broken Heart' by John Mayer. We chose this song down to the way the tune and lyrics fitted with our idea. We already had an idea in our head and chose a song we thought would fit that particular idea. We then changed our idea slightly to fit around the song. We also liked the way that the song has a consistent beat throughout and then suddenly changes. We already had bits of ideas and once we found our song, we made them fit into the song and when they would appear in our video. We altered our idea to make it fit with the beat of the music and to make the dramatic part of our idea to fit into this particular part of the music.

We are aiming our music video for teenage females as that is who his music is aimed at. We know this down to his choice of lyrics and what he chooses to write about. When going onto his myspace page, it shows that he has 469594 fans and most of these are female.

The lyrics are shown bellow. We like these lyrics as they talk about different aspects of a break up such as the emotional side and the physical side. We like the way this song doesn't really have a chorus and so there is no repetitiveness in our video. We like the way that the lyrics produce new ideas with every line and so we are constantly being given new ideas to try out. I also like the way he uses metaphors. 'Do I have to fall asleep with roses in my hands' is one example. He uses this metaphor to symbolise his dreams of being with her but realises that it is just a dream. I also like the way he ends most parts with 'No she's not, 'cause she's gone, gone, gone, gone, gone....' because it symbolises the end of their relationship. This also provides us with plenty of ideas and ways to end each part of the song not having to repeat ourselves. I also like the way the song ends; 'Then waking up is the hardest part'. This is one of the stronger lines of the song. Also because it's at the end, it tells us that it's the end of the relationship.

The music video to Daughters is filmed in black and white with only small times when it's filmed in colour. This is very effective as it shows and is clear that there are two different time periods within this video. Because this music video is filmed mainly in black and white, it shows the mood of the overall music video is negative and sad.

The first shot is out of focus and gradually becomes in focus. This shot shows John Mayer sitting playing his guitar. This shot draws people into the rest of the video as people wait until the shot it in focus to see what is happening.

As the shot progresses, another shot is placed over the top. This shot is of a woman's face. The woman's face is in a variety of colours. These two shots together are really effective as they show the two people involved and this is made clear by one being in black and white and the other being in colour.

There are very few shots to this music video. The next shot is of two shots placed together. On the left side of the screen is the woman in colour and the right hand screen is of John Mayer in black and white. We can clearly see with these two shots being placed together that they are sad.

There is very little light included in this music video. The light is artificial and has been placed in the top left hand corner of the screen. This places all the light on one side of his face. The rest of him and the background are in darkness. This is effective as it means we are able to see the only important thing, John Mayer on his own playing a guitar. By using very little light, we don't get distracted by everything else.

Nearly all the shots are close ups. This is so we can see the emotion in John Mayer's face and the woman's face. It also gives us a closer connection to the 'characters' in the music video.

There is not really setting to this music video. Because the background is in complete darkness, we are unable to see what is in the background. We are only albe to see John Mayer and the woman.

There are a lot fast shots included in this music video. This sets the scene very quickly but we are able to see the setting in more detail. The first few shots show close ups of a young girl putting money into a telescope at the beach in order to look around. We then are introduced to John Mayer through this telescope.

At the start of the video, an effect has been put in place where we gradually see more of the music video. This creates suspense as we want to see the rest of the video. This also happens at the end of the music video but in reverse, we see less of the music video.

John Mayer performs his song through out this music video. This appears to be a regular aspect of John Mayer music videos. It takes place on beach, in a car and then back to the beach when it is night time.

The lighting used in this music video is natural. The video is filmed outside and so natural lighting from the sun is used. At the end of the music video, it is night time. Lights from the pier behind him are used to light up the scene however it is clear that artificial lighting would have been used at this point otherwise it would have been too dark to see him.
